Session 2

2 — Fingernails & Fetches

Saturday night at Elysium wound down with Camila asking Weave how to befriend Alexandra, and Weave giving advice regarding nicknames and differences of personality. Weave left her office to find that Alexandra had already closed, and Alexandra asked Weave for parallel advice regarding Camila while Weave walked her to her car.

On returning home, Alexandra listened in at her parents' door and overheard her distraught mother wondering what they were going to do if they had to find somewhere else to live, and her father comforting her mother. Burning hot with anger, Alexandra went into her room determined to find whoever was responsible.

Meanwhile, in a dark office with a view of Vancouver's skyline, an exhausted man is touched by something greater than himself and too terrible to truly comprehend, and then begins to type furiously under its control.

At 5 AM on Sunday, James Dou called Thomas to tell him that a body had been found at Lost Lagoon, and that the scene was supernatural. Thomas rounded up the demigods starting with Step, but it was Dee arrived via portal first. While Dee took a breather, James pointed out that the corpse was a man in his late 30s, his teeth and fingernails were removed postmortem, and there was a magical residue on the body and the surface of the water.

As the Band converged, Alexandra brought coffee for everyone and Weave confirmed that drowning was the cause of death. Working together, the Band found a number of clues:

  • A wallet containing the ID of a corporate finanacial advisor named Martin "Marty" Coolidge
  • A duffel bag with the initials MC on the tag, a broken jar that had held a potent magical oil, and a single shell
  • A leather sheathe for a knife, dropped at the site of a struggle between Marty and multiple pawed creatures

Dee took some of the oil to identify at their sanctum, and Thomas photographed the scene and noticed a second set of footprints attempting to flee the struggle. Meanwhile, Step found Marty's facebook page and learned he was married to Molly Coolidge.

While searching her memory, Alexandra recalled a Mesoamerican mythological creature, a dog-like beast with a prehensile tail. With Alexandra's direction, Step found the wikipedia page for the Ahuizotl, and learned that they were connected to Aztec gods likeTlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue.

Though Marty's soul hadn't lingered, Weave located and spoke to the peaceful spirit of an Indigenous woman named Pauline. She didn't witness the murder or recognize Marty, but did say that "The Lady of the Lagoon" occasionally punishes mortals.

When Weave reported her findings, her morbid joke amused the lesser fairies watching the scene. In exchange for a drop of Thomas' blood, the fairies answered three questions. The Band learned that Marty had brought a young woman who looked like Alexandra to the Lagoon and that he had used a bone blade to summon a pack of Ahuizotl, which overwhelmed and drowned him. The young woman had tried to flee and screamed for help—"We didn't help, no, we just watched."

From there, the twenty-somethings went to the clubhouse to do research over breakfast provided by Alexandra. While Dee started their investigation of the oil, Step took the the Internet to learn about Marty Coolidge. After hacking into Marty's email, Step learned of his involvement in a luxury condominium development planned at Lost Lagoon and the name of Marty's boss, Ashton Crane. With Alexandra's help, they also found emails between Marty and his au pair, a young woman named Lucia "Lucy" Guevara.

Meanwhile, Thomas and Weave went to the Coolidge family home. Thomas had a brief conversation with a harried Molly Coolidge, who said that she hardly saw her husband these days and that he was focused on the Lost Lagoon project. She also revealed that men had visited the home in order to ensure Marty's commitment. Around the back, Weave found the garage locked and encountered Lucy, whose behavior was strange. Weave glimpsed the truth—the being before her was a fetch, a doll-like construct glamoured to look and sound like Lucy.

Thomas watched invisibly as the family got ready for church, and then he and Weave investigated Marty's home office. When Thomas unlocked the computer, a chat with Conspiracy opened and began to address him directly, and a satellite map began to zoom in on his location.

THOMAS
FINALLY, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN
WE HAVE MUCH TO TALK ABOUT
YOU CAN'T HIDE FOREVER

Weave was able to perceive a single spiritual echo before fleeing the house; she saw a distressed Marty talking to a god via his smartphone, agreeing to turn on Ashton Crane and betray the Lost Lagoon project as long as his family would be safe.
